Luis Jacob: Towards a Theory...

BOOK DESIGN

I had two aims for this monograph on artist Luis Jacob’s work published in 2009 by Walther König, Köln for the Kunstverein in Hamburg.

The first was to replicate, or at least capture in book form, the experience of the viewer in the exhibition space. I attempted to achieve this in part by presenting an immersive full-page sequence showing a visitor moving through the gallery space, and with sequences of installation shots where the transition from room to room was visible.

The second was to represent the artist’s various “Albums” by reproducing every assemblage in the series. Individual works were barely legible but it provided a valuable visual index of the complete artwork. This approach seems essential to understanding any sequential work but not something that is often attempted in books. I combined these indexes with larger selected details taking a different approach to how the details were presented with each album.

The design process benefitted greatly from ongoing discussions with the artist. In my experience, close collaboration leads to more open mindedness and creative risk taking.
